You can create custom menu links via two ways. One is by modifying the source code directly (look at file application/views/layout/layout.php) and the other is using the Layout Menus option in the Admin Panel.

You can add multiple links to a menu. This will cause the menu to appear as a clickable dropdown menu like the ones you see in the Sidebar. You can add links to any site, including pages on the system.

You can also provide an icon from Bootstrap as the layout link. These can be found here: http://getbootstrap.com/components/

There is also an option to turn on Menu Highlight in the Admin Panel. This option only applies to links that point to the system. This option will automatically add tracking content to a link so that when you view the link, the menu link will appear as highlighted.
